looks like a cat toy on the floor and the boy is holding a small object

of these pinprick sized specks are on the glass

but after examining the closely under magnification and taking into account the wear and soiling

and there is some wear to the cover paper

Since Ulysses S. Grant is on there, I think this CDV was probably shortly after he was elected in 1869. A shade under 4" x 2. 5", but it does not look trimmed and is in very good or better antique condition.
