Struck between 1866 and 1883, this distinctive five cent piece was the first to be made from the durable copper nickel alloy still used in nickels today. Its bold design, featuring a Union shield on the obverse, symbolizes strength and unity following the Civil War. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Shield Nickel was originally introduced to replace the
