Niezależnie od tego czy prowadzisz duży sklep internetowy, czy posiadasz tylko niewielką witrynę, musisz wiedzieć, że powstawanie kopii Twojej strony to codzienność. Często nie jesteś nawet świadomy, że zderzasz się z nimi każdego dnia.
W świecie SEO istnieje jednak szereg zabiegów, które pozwalają właścicielom stron walczyć z powielaniem treści ich stron. Jednym z tych sposobów jest tag canonical.
Czym jest tag canonical?
Canonical lub inaczej tag kanoniczny to jeden z meta tagów, który umieszczamy w kodzie strony w sekcji <head>. Ma on za zadanie informować roboty Google, która wersja strony jest oryginalna, czyli właśnie kanoniczna.
Zapobiega to powstawaniu duplikatów treści, które wykryte przez algorytmy Google, mogą doprowadzić do obniżenia pozycji w wynikach wyszukiwania, a co za tym idzie – zmniejszenia ruchu na stronie.
Nie jest on jednak koniecznością – Google jest w stanie samodzielnie wyznaczyć stronę oryginalną, wybierając tę, która ma najwięcej treści najlepszej jakości.
Kiedy powinniśmy stosować tag canonical?
W przypadku sklepów internetowych, duplicate content powstaje gdy w swojej ofercie posiadasz kilkanaście lub kilkadziesiąt podobnych produktów, różniących się od siebie wyłącznie rozmiarem albo kolorem. Stworzenie unikalnych opisów do każdego z nich mogłoby być nie lada wyzwaniem, nawet dla najbardziej doświadczonego copywritera.
Jeżeli w Twoim sklepie internetowym, użytkownik ma możliwość wyszukiwania interesujących go produktów, używając sortowania według konkretnych parametrów np. rozmiaru lub koloru, zmienia się droga dotarcia do tego towaru, jak również jego url, mimo że treść pozostaje ta sama.
Podobna sytuacja ma miejsce, gdy opublikujesz artykuł na blogu i przypiszesz go do różnych kategorii – adresy url się zmienią, jednak treść pozostanie w pierwotnej formie. Mamy tutaj do czynienia z powstawaniem kopii wewnątrz naszego serwisu.

Canonical – wskazówki przed wdrożeniem
Gdy już zdecydowałeś się umieścić tag canonical na swojej stronie, musisz pamiętać o kilku bardzo ważnych kwestiach:
– tag kanoniczny nie jest dyrektywą, tylko jedynie wskazówką, którą udzielamy robotom Google, może on jednak zostać przez nie zignorowany,
– na każdej podstronie możesz umieścić tylko jeden link kanoniczny – jeżeli wprowadzisz ich więcej, roboty Google zignorują każdy z nich i same wybiorą ważniejszą podstronę,
– unikaj tworzenia “łańcuszków” stron z tagami kanonicznymi,
– upewnij się czy adres witryny, która ma być kanoniczna, nie jest blokowany przez roboty Google – sprawdź czy nie ma na nim ustawionego atrybutu noindex,
– umieść na właściwej witrynie tag canonical, który wskazuje na nią samą, tzw. self-referential canonical,
– na adres kanoniczny wybieraj tylko tę stronę, na której znajdują się unikalne treści wysokiej jakości.
Jak ustawić tag canonical?
Wdrożenie tagu canonical na stronie jest bardzo proste, wystarczy umieścić go w sekcji <head> na witrynie:
Ważne jest, aby w kodzie strony użyć wersji bezwzględnej adresu – czyli z przedrostkiem, domeną i ścieżką względną.
Jeżeli korzystasz z systemu zarządzania treścią, takiego jak WordPress, Joomla lub PrestaShop, będzie to jeszcze prostsze.
Istnieje bardzo wiele powszechnie stosowanych wtyczek SEO, które pozwalają na ustawienie właściwego adresu URL. Wystarczy że w ustawieniach zaawansowanych odnajdziesz odpowiednią rubrykę dla kanonicznego URL:
Możesz również zrobić to poprzez sitemap.xml. Pamiętaj jednak, że w pliku z mapą strony powinny znaleźć się jedynie oryginalne adresy URL, które wskazujesz robotom Google do indeksacji:
Gdy wiesz już jak poprawnie zaimplementować tag canonical w swojej witrynie oraz kiedy powinieneś to zrobić, warto wspomnieć o sytuacjach, gdy wdrażanie tego tagu nie jest wskazane. Zamiast niego używa się wtedy przekierowania 301.
Canonical a przekierowanie 301 – które powinniśmy wybrać?
Przekierowanie 301 stosujemy przede wszystkim wtedy, gdy przenosimy swoją witrynę na inny system, zmieniamy adresy URL lub wdrożyliśmy właśnie certyfikat SSL.
Zabieg ten sprawia, że na stałe zmieniamy adres URL, a stara strona przestaje być indeksowana na rzecz nowej.
Przykładem mogą być kopie tej samej witryny z adresem z www/bez www, http/https lub index.html/index.php:
Powoduje to powstanie aż czterech jej kopii, a co za tym idzie – duplikacji treści. Jednak są to wersje, których nie potrzebujemy, dlatego na stałe przekierujemy je na właściwy adres URL.
Różnica pomiędzy nimi polega też na tym, że w przypadku zastosowania przekierowania 301, tracimy dostęp do starego adresu, a korzystając z tag canonical mamy wgląd do obu wersji.
Wybierając kanoniczny wariant strony, z punktu widzenia Google, dokonaliśmy zmiany adresu w indeksie wyszukiwarki.
Co w przypadku PageRank?
Gdy do naszej witryny prowadzą linki, które są kopiami, a do tych adresów ktoś dołączy kolejne hiperłącze, mamy do czynienia z rozrzuceniem naszej siły rankingowej, dotyczącej nieskończonej ilości adresów tego samego produktu. Marnujemy w ten sposób potencjał oryginalnej strony.
W takiej sytuacji pomocny staje się właśnie tag kanoniczny, który przenosi PageRank, czyli reputację z linków i kumuluje ją na stronie kanonicznej.

Jak łatwo zauważyć, tag canonical może być bardzo przydatny w wielu sytuacjach. Możesz dzięki niemu zapobiegać powielaniu treści na swojej stronie lub bronić się przed niezamierzoną duplikacją.
Jednak jego stosowanie może też nieść za sobą wiele szkód. Warto więc przed wdrożeniem go do swojej witryny zaplanować cały proces, od początku do końca.
Migracja serwisu za pomocą tagu kanonicznego może potrwać wiele dni lub tygodni, jednak poprawnie wykonany zabieg na pewno doprowadzi do zadowalających efektów.
